The Mineros played angry in the third period, stepping up their defense and making some shots outscoring the Zonkeys 25-11 and tying the game at 55 apiece to start the fourth. The Mineros kept coming in the fourth and after Omar Quintero was fouled hard at the 6:42 mark, you could start feeling Zonkey fans getting a bit anxious as the Zonkeys seemingly were letting the game slip away. Two techs were called on the Zonkeys, another on the Mineros and Derek Thomas (14 points) and Rodney Alexander (25 points) started taking over for the Mineros.

An Alexander fadeaway put the Mineros up 74-72 with a few minutes left effectively putting the breaks on a Zonkey comeback. But Chupa Ramirez (10 points) brought TJ back to life with a monstrous three to put TJ up 75-74 which was followed by another deep strike from threelandia at the one minute mark as  Omar Quintero nailed a dagger from from the corner to put the Mineros out of their misery. The Zonkeys finished the Mineros off,  winning 84-74. Marcus Morrison finished with 20 for the Zonkeys who improved to 24-11. The Mineros are 18-17...

...in other CIBACOPA action Tuesday night, the Rayos won again, their 19th straight which was a 115-83 drubbing of Navolato. Patrick Sander, Steve Monreal and Jesus Lopez combined for 64 Rayo points. Navolato got 25 from Charles Moore. Fuerza Guinda stumbled against the Caballeros 79-85, Robert Robinson had 30 and Rene Rougeau poured in 19 for the Caballeros in the win. Keith Gayden led Nogales with 31.

The Ostioneros kept up their winning pace with a 106-86 win over the Frayles. Jerome Habel and Jose Sanchez led the way for the Ostioneros combining for 41. Gabriel Giron had a monster night in the loss with 34. Tepic ran out of gas against Los Mochis falling 93-105. Los Mochis got 34 and 28 from Carlos Toussaint and Devon Pearson respectively. For Tepic Ray Reese had 35. Tepic, surprisingly, waived the CIBACOPA's leading rebounder and All Star, De'Angelo Riley. All teams run it back tonight...

Last night in Tijuna, the first place Rayos needed double overtime to take down the Zonkeys, 108-105. Marcus Morrison had a huge night for the Zonkeys with 38 and his teammate  Cyrus Tate added 18. Patrick Sanders is back in a big way for the Rayos, he had 28 followed by Brian Hamilton's 27 and Emmanuel Little's 20. Guayamas is chasing the Rayos and after 99-76 win over the Coras, they are just two games behind first place Hermosillo. Cananea pulled even to 14-14 after beating the Caballeros 107-99. They are tied with Guasave who also won last night downing Nogales 94-84. Nogales has been in a funk only winning 2 of their last 9 games while falling to 13-15 and 6th overall in the league. Los Mochis is inching up the leader board, after taking both games in the two game set against Navolato, they won 107-82 last night. Los Mochis is has one two straight after making some roster changes and is now 13-15 overall and is tied for 6th place in the league.

The South came out hot, pasting the north in the first quarter, making everything they put up. After that I sort of lost track until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter when Louis McCollough appeared to single handedly take over for the North and lead them to victory. He was everywhere in the fourth, three's, oops, turn arounds, he was a 'pesadilla' for the South and they couldn't contain him. He led all scorers with 39. The hometown favorite, Luis 'Chupa' Ramirez won the three point contest with 18 triples and there was a tie in the dunk contest...yes a tie. Derek Thomas, last year's winner, thought he had a repeat title after a 're Zonkulous' 360 that had folks scurrying, even fellow contestants but...Darnell Hugee, a Zonkey, pulled out some chair tricks and managed to wow the home fans and sway the judges enough on his last attempt to split the crown with Thomas.

Now, it's back to business as usual as the CIBACOPA heads down the playoff stretch with teams playing 47 games in the next week and a half. (note: that's not really true but CIBACOPA teams will be playing 4 times per week in the next few weeks as the season winds down.

For the South team, newcomer to the CIBACOPA Tayloe Taylor,  will rep the Pioneros along with Eric Cuen and young gun Juan Pablo Favela, from Navolato, Ronald Selleaze and Froylan Verdugo will suite up along with Gabriel Girón and Russell Carter  of the Frayles.  Big man and LNBP veteran Adrián Zamora will join his teammate  Robert Robinson from the Caballeros and De'Agelo Riley and Sergio Lugo will give the Coras something to cheer about in Tijuana.

Nowadays, the 43-year-old is trying to remain patient while passing on her knowledge to the South American nation’s U17 national women's team. “At the beginning they acted like fans,” Arcain said of her players ahead of the team's preparations for the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women that will take place in Amsterdam, Netherlands this summer (17-26 August). It's understandable to see why the young players would be nervous and left in awe. After all, they are being coached by a world champion (1994), an Olympic silver (1996) and bronze (2000) medalist.

“They asked me how I controlled my nerves before the game,” Arcain said.
